Legal Fight for Slots Jackpot

May 2007

A VIP player at South Africa's GrandWest casino in Cape Town has taken his fight for a jackpot he reckoned that he is owed  to the Cape High Court to force the casino to pay him R40-million he says he won. (about $5.7m)

GrandWest casino says Abdul Gani Shabudin has no claim to this jackpot because the slot malfunctioned before Shabudin pressed a single button. The casino says, Shabudin waived his right to any claim by having accepted a meal voucher for "inconvenience", which he subsequently used.

Shabudin says that he put in his MVG smart card into one of the slots- when he removed the card he noticed that he had credits totalling R40m

GrandWest say the maximum amount that can be paid out on that machine is R50, 000 and this was displayed on the machine.

"The biggest amount ever paid out on a slot machine at GrandWest is less than R3m."

If he loses,  Shabudin will have to foot the legal bills of the casino. Ouch! Sounds like an expensive meal voucher!
